Batwoman!

A few weeks ago I was so lucky to perform in the Nerdlesque Festival in New York city as the vibrant superhero Batwoman.  Not Batgirl… Batwoman.  I also performed this act at Peepshow TO’s Nude 52 show last October.  I thought I would share some of the photos from these events of the epic costume I put together for this act.  This is another example of Burlesque Cosplay, where slight modifications are made to help with the removal of each item.  Instead of having one full bodysuit I decided to cut out the thighs and put in garters.  I also made the boots into bootcovers that are removed like stockings with a simple nude dance shoe underneath.  The most fantastic part of this costume though is the cape!  This thing is a monster that stretches past my reach and has dowels sewn in to help me hold it up.  But my absolute favourite part of the costume in my amazing mask which is leather and was made for me by the brilliant leatherworker and costume designer Adam Smith!  I love the way this costume turned out and I have found each time I wear it that there are a lot of Batwoman fans out there that appreciate the outcome of my effort and love seeing this fierce, Jewish, lesbian badass hero come to life!

Joan Holloway: Mad Men Cosplay

Today is the premiere of the 7th season of Mad Men!!  I have been a die-hard fan of Mad Men from the get go.  Not only is it one of the most intelligent, well-written and captivating shows on television it’s also packed full of amazing costuming, styling and set design.  Seeing all those beautiful 60s/70s outfits really inspires me creatively.  I just had to cosplay my favourite character from Mad Men, Joan Holloway!  To make this dress I bought a vintage 60s dress pattern and picked a very Joanie red fabric.  This dress is super comfy and I actually wear it to my work (as a receptionist) quite often.  I like to embrace that Joan strength and power when I sit at my desk as work.

Little Red Doll

Back when I was still in fashion design school I created these pieces for a final project.  They walked the runway in the end of year fashion show and have also been photographed for Auxiliary Magazine.  But my favourite use of this Victorian style, shear blouse and red, silk bloomer shorts was in this photoshoot with model Elizabeth and photographer Bailey Northcott!

LBD

Every girl needs a LBD in her wardrobe, right? I made this dress from some amazing black cotton fabric I got on sale at Fabricland.  I fell in love with the bottom edge of this fabric which has a lovely embroidered, cutout pattern.  It’s a nice light dress to wear in the spring but has a real dark, witchy feel.  I added a few lace details to play up that gothic look.  Jewellery by Celluloid Sleaze!

Spring is Here!

It’s officially spring and you know what that means?  Snow!  Well, here in Toronto it’s definitely not feeling like spring yet but I’m in the mood to shed some layers and go out in a fun dress like this one; a little Betty Monroe design I made a few summers ago. I’m a sucker for a beautiful rosey floral and a red ruffle and this dress always makes me want to dance.  I hope I help put a spring in your step today!

Babydoll Cosplay

A couple years ago my gorgeous friend Gen asked me to make a Babydoll cosplay to wear at Toronto Comicon.  Instead of her battle outfit which is the most commonly cosplayed look of hers, Gen wanted her institution outfit that she wears when she’s not in her fantasy land.  I absolutely loved making this dress!  It has a cute, sailor style collar and side pleating on the skirt.  It buttons up and has a long exaggerated tie.  Gen totally rocked this look and I love the way it fits her!

Striped Dolly Skirt

I made this skirt with some left over fabric from a Tim Burton, Sleepy Hollow costume I made for a burlesque act.  It’s a nice classic skirt that really adds a lot of punch to an outfit.  I adore wearing long skirts like this.  They give such great body proportion and make your legs look endless.

Hope you’re all having a fabulous monday!

Pussy Whipped Wednesday

Last night was Pussy Whipped Wednesday at the Boxine Sex Club in Toronto.  The lovely Laura Desiree produced the second monthly Dances the Cramps Taught Us event with burlesque performers and go-go dancers shaking it to songs by the Cramps.  My design partner/bff, Betty Quirk and I did our go-go/cat fight routine.  We were surrounded by lots of talented dancers including Tanya Cheex, Fionna Flauntit, Esther DeVille, Lorretta Jean and Aviva Mirage!

Disney Harlette Princesses

While I was at home watching the Oscars on Sunday the absolutely astounding burlesque troupe The Harlettes were performing in their annual Burlesque Oscars show!  These beauties are certainly not lacking for talent and by all accounts had a brilliantly successful show.  I was lucky enough to get to make a few skirts to accompany their Disney Princess outfits for one of their acts.  Take a look at Maria Juana as Cineralla, Chow Mein as Snow White and Bunny Angora as Belle…
